In my book, On the Edge of Then and Now, my characters share their darkest demons and fears through words on paper planes, which feels somehow intimate but less scary, flying those confessions across the room soaring just high enough to avoid the candle’s flame.
There are so many ways one could fly, like in planes across the sky, or from high-as-a-kite drugs, or sneak-flying under the radar.
Becky wishes to fly like a phoenix from the ashes of her past and her aunt’s broken legacy while Cade’s dad often flies into rages that end with Cade on the floor like a broken bird flown from its nest too soon. He never fights back because he wouldn’t hurt a fly, not even those flinching on the walls as they watch, not knowing how to share the savage secrets tucked inside those walls.
I’m hoping one day, my book, my words with wings, will fly off the shelves, even if reaching that golden number of 3,000 might only happen when pigs fly.
It’s a lofty goal, but so is a fly described as a dragon with iridescent wings straight from a fairy tale or flies full of fire with their sole intent to light up our nights.
One day, my friends, my words, once rooted to the page on which they bloomed, will fly like an eagle and I’ll urge you all to come fly with me, maybe even to the moon, since that’s where most dreams live, nestled into the cozy blanket of stars until they fall or shoot or soar or fly as we wake, smiling at the thought that sometimes dreams really do come true; proof that those fails and falls don’t kill you if you just keep standing up again, stronger, more defiant and resolute than you knew was possible, so write your words, then fold them tight into a plane and sail them along that breeze you feel.
You never know where the wind will take them, but one thing’s for sure. Words have wings and were meant to take flight so that they can touch others, spark something inside them, and where there’s a spark, there will be fire, and fire fuels passion, and that passion will change the world, one thought, one word, one person at a time, so fly, my friends. Fly higher than your clouds of doubt and disappointment, and one day, you will reach your dreams.
